LAVA's Methods
Cooperative Learning
Productive citizens of the 21st Century must be able to work as part of a team to accomplish a task. Cooperative learning techniques also allow students to develop their social and communication skills. Students will learn to share their knowledge and respect the ideas and skills of others.
Flexible Grouping
Our teachers will use flexible grouping to meet the needs of their students. Students may be grouped and regrouped based on such factors as skills they need to master, knowledge they need to share, reading abilities, grade level, and their educational needs.
Differentiated Instruction
Children have different strengths and styles of learning. Teachers will use knowledge of multiple intelligences in the classroom to build on each student’s strengths and to address diverse learning styles.
Project-based Learning
Project-based learning will be used to teach and to reinforce basic skills. Children learn by doing. Our hands-on learning approach will give students an opportunity to take skills that they have learned and to apply them to meaningful projects. These projects will give students an opportunity to develop and demonstrate critical thinking skills, problem solving skills and cooperative learning.
Technology
Computers will be used as a tool for teaching and learning. Students will have access to technology for research, analysis, communication, skill building and self-expression. Students will have access to online instruction and will be able to communicate with teachers on a daily basis.
Hands-on Fieldwork
LAVA has developed a partnership with the Lassen Volcanic National Park. Our team, in coordination with park officials, coordinates and integrates STEM studies that include classroom, and fieldwork studies.
